FDMS® DebitDebit in the point-of-sale (POS) environment is a payment mechanism whereby the cardholder's funds are debited from their bank account for purchases at a merchant location. There are two different types of Debit: on-line Debit and off-line Debit. For purposes of this description, the more precise terms of PIN-based (on-line debit) and Signature-based Debit (off-line debit) will be used. PIN-based Debit is a transaction that requires the cardholder to enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN) at the point-of-sale to authorize payment of goods. The cardholder is not required to sign the receipt and as soon as the transaction is authorized the money is debited from the cardholder's bank account. Signature-based Debit transactions do not require a PIN but do require the cardholder to sign the receipt. The transaction is processed the same way as a credit card transaction, in that the posting of the transaction against the cardholder's account occurs within a few days of the transaction being settled. Merchant settlement must occur in order for the cardholder's account to be debited. FDMS® debit services are ideal for:
